From the 23rd until the 27th of November, members of EUFOR trained 22 new instructors for Mine Risk Education (MRE) courses in Camp Butmir. EUFOR supported this training alongside Non-Governmental Organization ‘Stop Mines’ and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre (BH MAC). Mine Risk Education (MRE) courses are conducted throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, informing people about the risk of mines and what to do if a mine is discovered.
Contributing to the community
Among those taking part in the MRE course were members of the EUFOR Liason and Observation Team (LOT) members. There are 17 LOT houses throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their task is to maintain links with their communities to help understand the concerns and opinions of the people. After this training, the LOT personnel will be able to teach MRE in their communities. In 2015 alone, 12,000 people have attended MRE delivered by LOT personnel. MRE is a key part of EUFOR’s effort to reduce the effects of mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
